Fasting Guidelines Before Surgery - General

To ensure your safety during anesthesia and surgery, it is essential that you follow these fasting instructions carefully:

  • Do not eat, drink, smoke, or chew anything for at least 6 hours prior to your scheduled surgery start time.
This includes all food, water, gum, mints, and any other substances.

Failure to follow these instructions may result in your procedure being delayed or postponed for your safety.

You will receive a text message 1–2 days before your surgery date confirming your admission and procedure details, including your exact fasting start time. Please read this message carefully and follow the instructions provided.

Fasting Guidelines For Patient's Taking GLP-1 Medications

If you are taking a GLP-1 medication (such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Saxenda etc), it’s important to follow specific fasting instructions before your procedure. These medications can slow stomach emptying, which may increase the risk of regurgitation or aspiration during anaesthesia.

In addition to standard fasting guidelines, you may be asked to stop your GLP-1 medication for a period of time prior to your procedure. The exact timing can vary depending on the type of medication (daily or weekly) and your individual circumstances.

You will receive a text message 1–2 days prior to your surgery with fasting instructions, and your anaesthetist will also contact you before your procedure to confirm your individual plan.

Please carefully review the latest fasting recommendations provided by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) at the link below, and follow any additional instructions given by your doctor or anaesthetist.
